ToggleWHAT HAPPENED?
Clarke was facing the media following Scotland's humiliating 5-1 defeat to Germany in the Euro 2024 opener and was asked about an incident in the match that saw him arguing with set-piece coach Austin McPhee after the Tartan Army conceded following a poor free-kick. But the head coach was perplexed when asked about the exchange after the match.

WHAT CLARKE SAID
Speaking in his press conference after the match, Clarke said: "Is that a serious question? We are fine. I can’t even remember it. It’s emotional on the touchline. Ibelieve the players will get over this quickly. I have never doubted my players and I never will."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
It was more than just an issue with set pieces for Scotland, who were outclassed in every department by Germany. After conceding early, the Tartan Army will be disappointed with their response and will have to regroup if they are to retain any hope of still progressing from Group A.

WHAT NEXT FOR CLARKE AND SCOTLAND?
Scotland will have to put the opening night loss behind them and regroup for their second game in a few days. They face Switzerland on 19 June in what is now a must-win game for Clarke and his players. They will end their group stage campaign against Hungary a few days later.
